Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. In fear of stress, her parents were not keen to let her pursue acting before she turned 18. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends as she moved from Boston University. Perry began her career with New York after graduation, getting small parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being a fan of the persona.
